Amazingly evolved Indian Telecom business from single State run BSNL to multiple Private operators in last 10 years. from 3 crore customers to 40 crore customers still adding 1 million per Month for last 1 year. from pure analog Voice to converged NGN networks capable of handling intellegent voice,vedio,data in TBs.from years of waiting time for simple telephone connection to on the spot off the shelp service activation.Now,Its part of daily life of 40 crore Indians.Its a true success story.But,with increased competition,advanced inexpesive technologies,new operators in queue,There is a
tremendous margin pressures for service providers in india to sustain the business.
Its an imperative to generate alternate revenue streams. future may find cut throat competition with narrow margins.It might lead to another round of consolidation in indian telecom business,At this context,Operators should
bring in innovation in products and services with mass customisation.not only interms of new products and services but also anticipating customers needs employing sophisticated approaches to customer services and being good at coming up with creative ideas is most importent for business continuity.
We should now move on from plain old telecom service provider to converged
service provider with system integration capabilities in web,exiting enterprise and entertainment software applications and devices.It may me speaking web over
hstp,on demad ERP access from PDA or Integrating payment devices,NFC etc.
I dont see much act from service providers on Innovation and New Product Development front while they are busy with subscriber additions.But,I strongly feel that it is a time to move from Brick and Mortar telecom business to Hybrid business models with increasing internet penetration levels. This will help service providers to cut down the costs in their expensive distribution value chain significantly. One such Initiative I could see with indian tsp Tata Tele which has recently launched their online mobile store. The entire process of choosing handset,service plan,submittion of application to delivery from nearest store made online. This is an extreamly brilliant work out towards hybrid business model.
While doing so,It is also most important and challege to educate and drive conventional business friendly indian consumers to adopt innovative hybrid business models to avail products and services of their choice.
